Global moves that matter for Asia
- This week in Asia FSD (26 Oct to 1 Nov). 1) South Korea had the biggest week: Tesla Korea asked MOLIT for a special exemption so China-made Model 3/Y (183,407 cars) can run FSD (Supervised), a Seoul court threw out the FSD refund suit by 89 owners, and police referred 80 owners to prosecutors for unlocking FSD with unauthorised devices. 2) Australia: Tesla asked the Senate to bring AV laws forward to 2027 and allow a public-road trial in 2027, citing 160M+ km of FSD (Supervised) in Australia and New Zealand. 3) Vietnam: Tesla started hiring its first local team, including a charging project developer. 4) Charging: Malaysia plans 6 more Supercharger sites by year-end, new sites opened in Tokyo (Edogawa) and Hong Kong (Tai Koo), and 5 Asian towns won Tesla's Supercharger vote. 5) On our feeds, China clips led the week: the Xiangtan truck-debris dodge was our top post. No country's FSD status changed this week. FSD Asia Watch
- Musk: FSD can now handle gray kittens on gray tarmac at night. In a livestreamed interview, Elon Musk called gray kittens on a gray road at night in low visibility one of the hardest tests, said "we actually did solve that" and that Tesla is "making rapid month-over-month progress". It's his claim, with no data shared. Elon Musk, livestreamed interview
- Clip: FSD (Supervised) reverses to make room for a pickup (Virginia, USA). A pickup tries to turn through a gap that's too tight, and FSD shifts into reverse to make room. The owner says v14.3.9. Trenier, Model Y owner
- Tesla launches FSD (Supervised) referrals, US only. A referred friend gets 1 free month of FSD (Supervised); if they subscribe, the referrer gets 1 free month or $99 in Tesla Credits. US only for now. Tesla North America on X
- 5 Asian towns win Tesla's Supercharger vote. Tesla added this round's winners to its Supercharger map, including Genting Sempah (Malaysia), Miyazu (Japan), Eumnae-ri (South Korea), Nantou (Taiwan) and Phrae (Thailand). A new voting round is open. Tesla Charging on X
- FSD miles could reach about 32B to 44B by the end of 2027 (our projection). Tesla's FSD (Supervised) safety report counter showed 16,756,732,057 miles on 28 Oct 2026 (the report excludes China), up from 7 billion on 27 Dec 2025. Each new billion now takes about 29 days, down from 53 days early in 2026, and the fleet adds roughly 35 million miles a day. This is an FSD Asia Watch projection, not a Tesla figure. If today's pace stays flat, the fleet reaches about 32B miles by 31 Dec 2027. If the daily pace keeps growing at half its 2026 rate, it reaches about 35.5B (our base case). If it compounds like 2026, it reaches about 44B. According to eletric-vehicles.com, Elon Musk wrote on X in January 2026 that roughly 10 billion miles of training data is needed for safe unsupervised self-driving. The fleet passed that in May, and FSD is still supervised. Tesla also reported a record 1.74M active FSD subscriptions in Q3 2026. Our take: more countries in Asia approving FSD would push the curve toward the high case. Tesla FSD (Supervised) Vehicle Safety Report
- Tesla's manuals now call the FSD computer the 'SI Computer'. Tesla's owner's manuals for the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck (software 2026.38.3) now say 'SI Computer', short for Super Intelligence, where they used to say 'AI Computer' or 'FSD Computer'. Under the new names, HW3 would become SI3 and AI4 would become SI4. That part is expected, since Tesla hasn't announced the rename. It's a name change only, with the same hardware and no new features, and Drive Tesla Canada found that in-car screens still show 'AI Computer'. The change follows Tesla AI becoming Tesla Super Intelligence on X. For owners in Asia, your car's computer is the same, and only the label changes. Not a Tesla App
- Tesla's FSD safety page: 9x fewer major collisions than the est. US average (Tesla's data). Tesla's FSD (Supervised) Vehicle Safety Report, checked on 27 Oct 2026, says cars on FSD (Supervised) have 9x fewer major collisions, 7x fewer minor collisions and 6x fewer off-highway collisions than Tesla's estimated US average, over 16.7B+ FSD miles (6.6B+ in cities). Tesla says FSD 'improves U.S. road safety by over 80%' and estimates that 32,000+ lives and 1,900,000+ injuries could potentially be saved per year, extrapolated to 2024 US vehicle miles. These are Tesla's own figures. Rates use a rolling 12 months, updated quarterly, and exclude China. Tesla does not assess fault, and a crash counts as FSD if FSD was active at any point in the 5 seconds before it. For countries in Asia still waiting on FSD, this is the kind of data regulators will be weighing. Tesla: FSD (Supervised) Vehicle Safety Report
- FSD safety data: how Tesla counts crashes. How Tesla's FSD safety numbers are built, according to its safety page. A major collision is an airbag or other non-reversible restraint deploying. A minor collision is a Delta-V of at least 8 km/h within 150 ms. A crash counts as FSD if FSD was active at any point in the 5 seconds before impact, and Tesla does not assess fault. The 'US average' is FHWA 2024 vehicle miles traveled divided by crash-involved vehicles in NHTSA's CISS data. Rates use a rolling 12 months, updated quarterly, and exclude China. The page also cites NHTSA 2023 data: 30% of fatalities involved drunk driving, 29% speeding, 29% of collisions distracted driving, and 44% of vehicle-occupant fatalities were unbelted. Tesla: FSD (Supervised) Vehicle Safety Report
- Clip: a Tesla keeps driving through thick fog (claim: FSD still sees). A Douyin clip shows a Tesla driving through thick white fog, with the screen still drawing the road ahead. The claim is that FSD can still see, but we can't confirm FSD was engaged for the whole clip. Fog like this is common on highland roads in Asia, like Cameron Highlands and Genting. Douyin
- Latvia approves Tesla FSD (Supervised), the 10th European country. Tesla Europe says FSD (Supervised) is now approved in Latvia, with rollout starting soon. It's the 10th European country to grant temporary approval, after the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia and Slovakia (list via Roland Pircher). In Asia, only South Korea has FSD so far, plus Australia and New Zealand. Tesla Europe on X
