Tesla FSD in Malaysia: where it stands

Pending approval · Last updated 19 Oct 2026 · status source

FSD (Supervised) isn't usable in Malaysia yet, but Tesla's own CVPR 2026 slide lists Malaysia as pending regulatory approval. Tesla stopped selling the RM32,000 one-time option after 30 Jun 2026 and says a subscription is 'coming soon' with no date, and no Tesla FSD application to JPJ or the transport ministry has been announced. Ministers say the law still requires a human driver and is being reviewed, the official goal is Level 3 self-driving by 2030, and Tesla is now hiring Autopilot test drivers in Cyberjaya.

Tesla is hiring Autopilot vehicle operators in Cyberjaya

Tesla's official Malaysia careers site lists "Vehicle Operator - Autopilot (Contract)" in Cyberjaya, posted 24 Sep and still open on 19 Oct. Operators drive prototype cars 6-8 hours a day on set and open-road routes to test and validate safety systems, with camera and audio checks and daily drive reports. It's a testing and data role, not an approval, so Malaysia stays Not available.

Malaysia signed up to the UN driver-assist rule FSD needs, but JPJ hasn't made it local law yet

UN treaty records list Malaysia as applying UN Regulation 171 (DCAS) since 22 Sep 2024, as a 1958 Agreement member that didn't opt out. Under that treaty, Malaysia accepts R171 approvals granted by other member countries. But JPJ hasn't gazetted R171 into Malaysian vehicle rules: its Nov 2025 type-approval slides don't list it, and even R157 is still 'future'. The 02 series, adopted by WP.29 in June 2026, adds city manoeuvres and is expected around early 2027 (no official date yet). It's a rulebook, not an FSD approval.

Malaysia moves to Pending: Tesla's own slide lists it as pending FSD approval

The FSD rollout map Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy showed at CVPR on 3 Jun 2026 colours Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak, yellow for 'Pending regulatory approval', alongside Thailand, India, Taiwan and Japan. We missed it in June and have now updated Malaysia's status to match how we treat those countries. It's Tesla's own list, not a regulator decision: FSD still doesn't work on Malaysian roads and no JPJ approval or application has been announced.

Owner report, unverified

Owners say FSD emails to Tesla Malaysia go unanswered; advisors' guesses range from 2 years to before 2030

In a TOMY Facebook thread, a member who bought the RM32k FSD option says emails to Tesla Malaysia about it were ignored. Other members say Tesla advisors told them FSD (Supervised) could come 'within 2 years' or 'before 2030', and one says an earlier 3-month operator round ran last year. Second-hand, unofficial and not verified.

Putrajaya starts an RM1 autonomous electric bus route

A self-driving electric bus now runs route P113, a six-stop weekday loop from MRT Putrajaya Sentral, for RM1 a ride. It's a public-transport pilot, not a private-car approval, so it doesn't change FSD's status.
